Wheako Poneke Experience Wellington is looking for a visionary leader to join our Executive Leadership Team in the role of Director, Art & City Gallery Wellington.

This role will lead the curatorial vision for Te Whare Toi City Gallery Wellington, aligning it to our strategy, operational environment and organisational goals. Collaborating with the Executive Leadership Team, oversee the conceptualisation, implementation and delivery of toi initiatives within 6 iconic Poneke institutions, committed to bringing remarkable experiences to our communities.

Take on an exciting opportunity as we re-envision what audience-centric art experiences in central Wellington look like, navigate challenges brought on by building disruptions, and lead the vision for reopening in 2026 when we return home to Te Ngakau Square.

Te turanga | The role
• Provide the vision and curatorial leadership at Te Whare Toi City Gallery Wellington
• Provide leadership across all art-related initiatives, focussing attention on the more complex and organisational level activities.
• Empower people and project leaders in an organisation to build and maintain meaningful relationships across the organisation.
• Provide strategic direction for artistic vision and curatorial nuances.
• Ensure there is high-quality curation, exhibition design, and visitor engagement.

Nga tino pukenga me nga wheako | The essential skills and experience for the role
• Proven and recent experience in senior arts management, curation, and exhibition design, with knowledge of contemporary art trends and best practices.
• A demonstrated commitment to the implementation of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, tikanga and kawa.
• Established national and international networks in the arts sector leading to demonstrated success in securing art exhibitions.
• A dedication to excellence and continuing to build on the reputation of our organisation and institutions.
• A proven track record of leading strategy development and successful implementation
• Experience leading work across a functions-based structure to ensure a seamless, mahitahi approach to your mahi and that of your team.
• Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
